“Working together for healthy streams and working land”
The Clatskanie River at a Glance
25 miles of river connect the Coast Range foothills to the Columbia River.
110 square miles of watershed — about 70,400 acres — connect forests, farms, and the Clatskanie community.
At least 11 contributing streams, including the Little Clatskanie River, North Fork, Carcus Creek, Page Creek, and Conyers Creek, feed the river.
More than 70% of the watershed is working forest, linking healthy waterways with local livelihoods.
Approximately 15% of the basin is unconfined floodplain, providing space for high water and valuable opportunities for habitat restoration.
Two creek-fed reservoirs in the basin supply Clatskanie’s drinking water, healthy headwaters matter.
The City’s water system can treat up to 1 million gallons per day and serves approximately 970 metered connections.
The battle for native plant diversity continues…
Why the Clatskanie Basin is important
Provides vital fish habitat: Supports salmon, steelhead, lamprey, and other native fish that depend on connected streams, cool water, and healthy habitat.
Supports wildlife: Its streamside forests and wetlands provide food, shelter, and movement corridors for birds, amphibians, and other wildlife.
Connects the watershed to the Columbia River: Carries water, sediment, wood, and nutrients from the Coast Range foothills to the Columbia River.
Protects water quality: Healthy streamside vegetation filters runoff, stabilizes banks, and shades the river.
Helps manage flooding: Connected floodplains and wetlands give high water room to spread out and slow down.
Strengthens climate resilience: Healthy river habitats help fish, wildlife, and communities cope with warmer temperatures, drought, and changing rainfall.
Supports community life: Offers opportunities for recreation, outdoor learning, and connection to the landscape.
Reflects local identity: The river is a defining feature of Clatskanie and connects upstream landowners with the downstream community.
